Daniel Ortega highlights peaceful maritime dispute resolution
During the 46th anniversary ceremony of the Nicaraguan Navy, President Daniel Ortega emphasized that Nicaragua has successfully defended its maritime sovereignty through peaceful legal channels rather than armed conflict. He specifically referenced the maritime dispute with Colombia, noting that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) provided a resolution that prevented potential military confrontation.
Ortega recalled moments of high tension where Nicaraguan naval units faced powerful military vessels in disputed waters, asserting that his forces remained in position without retreating. He characterized the ICJ ruling as a “peaceful victory” for the nation.
In addition to the commemorative remarks, the event included the presentation of Naval Merit medals to various officers. Rear Admiral Ángel Eugenio Fonseca reported that the Navy has completed over 4,200 missions, covering more than 40,000 nautical miles to ensure security in the Caribbean and Pacific waters, as well as the Gulf of Fonseca.
