Nicaragua releases 1,500 prisoners for patriotic holidays

The Nicaraguan government has released 1,500 common prisoners under a family coexistence regime to commemorate the country’s patriotic holidays and the anniversary of the death of Rigoberto López Pérez. The release took place at the National Penitentiary System headquarters near Managua, including the ‘La Modelo’ prison, as well as seven other correctional facilities.

Interior Minister María Amelia Coronel Kinloch stated that the benefit allows inmates to return to their homes to pursue a new stage of responsibility and work. According to official data, this latest action brings the total number of common prisoners released so far this year to approximately 7,900.

These releases are part of a recurring pattern where the government utilizes significant national dates—such as Mother’s Day, Holy Week, and the anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution—to grant similar benefits. Since 2014, the family coexistence regime has been used as a humanitarian policy, with monitoring reports suggesting tens of thousands of inmates have been released under this system over the last decade.
