Nicaragua reports 12% decrease in breast cancer deaths

Nicaragua has seen a 12% reduction in breast cancer fatalities, according to recent data. Deaths recorded between January and September fell from 199 in 2025 to 175 during the same period in 2026.

In observance of World Breast Cancer Day on October 19, the Bertha Calderón Hospital hosted a health fair focused on early detection. The event provided access to mammograms, breast ultrasounds, and biopsies. Additionally, the Dr. Juan Ignacio Gutiérrez Sacasa National Oncology Center held a gathering for over 150 women currently undergoing treatment or who have survived the disease to share experiences and participate in recreational activities.

Early detection remains a critical factor in recovery, as the disease can spread from milk ducts or tissue to lymph nodes and other organs if not identified in its localized stages.
