Nicaraguan Army becomes focal point in political struggle

The Nicaraguan Army has become a central focal point in the country's political struggle between the ruling administration and the opposition. During the institution's 47th anniversary on September 2, the Unidad Nacional Azul y Blanco (UNAB) addressed military personnel, urging them not to use weapons against the population and offering a place of respect within a democratic Nicaragua for those not involved in repression.

In response, Commander-in-Chief Julio César Avilés reaffirmed the military's support for the constitutional reforms led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. Avilés called for loyalty and cohesion, labeling critics as “traidores” and “vendepatrias”.

Avilés, who has held the position since 2010, represents a departure from previous leadership patterns where commanders typically served five-year terms. Following a 2014 reform that removed reelection prohibitions, he is positioned to remain in command until 2031. This consolidation of power at the top has led to an aging leadership structure, creating a bottleneck for the promotion of lower-ranking officers.
