Nicaraguan Army honors Indios Flecheros of Matagalpa

The Nicaraguan Army and military educational institutions held a ceremony at the Hacienda San Jacinto historical site to honor the Indios Flecheros of Matagalpa. The event included military commanders, faculty, and students from various training centers, such as the Superior Center for Military Studies “General de División José Dolores Estrada Vado” and the National Sergeant School. Participants laid floral offerings at the monument of General José Dolores Estrada Vado and the monument dedicated to the Indios Flecheros to recognize their role in defending national sovereignty.

The ceremony commemorates the historical significance of the Flecheros, a group of approximately 60 indigenous youths from communities including Yúcul, Matapalo, San Pablo, El Chile, and Jucuapa. On September 14, 1856, these fighters, armed primarily with bows and arrows, joined forces with patriots led by Colonel José Dolores Estrada to defend against filibuster forces led by William Walker. The historical event highlights the indigenous resistance against foreign intervention during the struggle to protect Nicaraguan territory and sovereignty.
