Nicaraguan Army kills two suspects in rural military operation

The Nicaraguan Army conducted a military operation in the Los Cocos hill area, located 37 kilometers northwest of Siuna, resulting in the deaths of two suspected criminals. The operation was part of the ‘Plan de Seguridad en el Campo’ (Rural Security Plan) following reports from local producers regarding armed individuals in the area.

According to official military reports, the armed group was allegedly involved in various crimes, including murder, extortion, theft of livestock and money, and the cultivation and sale of marijuana. During the encounter, the military patrol ordered the suspects to stop, but the group opened fire, leading to an armed exchange. One of the deceased has been identified as José Ismael Cerros Herrera, while the identity of the second individual remains undisclosed.

During the operation, military forces seized two AK-47 rifles and a shotgun. Additionally, they located and destroyed a marijuana plantation along with seeds. The Army stated it will continue patrolling rural areas to ensure the safety of agricultural workers and producers.
