Nicaraguan opposition accuses government of inaction over severe drought

The Nicaraguan opposition group Ciudadanos por la Libertad (CxL) has accused the government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo of inaction regarding a severe drought affecting Central America.

According to CxL, the drought directly impacts 37 municipalities and approximately 1.32 million people within Nicaragua’s ‘Dry Corridor’. The group warned that the government has shown indifference to the urgent needs of the population, risking significant damage to local production, exports, and family incomes.

Climate monitoring suggests that a strong and prolonged El Niño phenomenon could persist until early 2027. In the affected regions, rainfall levels have reportedly fallen between 45% and 65% below historical averages, with some areas seeing decreases of up to 70%.
