Nicaragua's leadership delivers religious rhetoric amid exile of former Miss Universe

On Thursday, July 30, 2026, Vice President Rosario Murillo addressed the nation on Multinoticias Canal 4, opening with a religious message that declared “God is love” and praised Nicaragua’s dignity, sovereignty and future under divine guidance.

Former Miss Universe Sheynnis Palacios said she would travel across Nicaragua’s regions – from Carazo’s tacos to Granada’s vigorón, the Masaya volcano and Corn Island’s beaches – if she could return. She noted she is unable to do so because the government of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Murillo placed her under a forced, indefinite exile, viewing her 2023 Miss Universe victory and subsequent public celebrations as a political threat.

Palacios’ remarks highlight the regime’s tightening control over public figures and its use of religious language in official speeches.
