Nicaragua's Ministry of Health expands community programs for addiction recovery and dengue prevention

The Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (MINSA) held a participatory session at the Benjamín Medina Solís Center for Addiction Care in western Managua. The event combined personal reflection, recreational activities and multidisciplinary support—psychology, psychiatry, social work, nursing and natural medicine—to strengthen families and assist participants in overcoming alcohol, drug and technology addictions. Clinician Norman Montano reported that many attendees have returned to work and improved family relationships after the program.

In a separate initiative, MINSA carried out a dengue‑prevention campaign on 27 July in the Niños Mártires de Ayapal neighbourhood of Managua. Teams from the Silvia Ferrufino Health Center visited 270 homes, removed mosquito breeding sites, applied larvicide and conducted indoor fumigation, reaching 1,303 residents across 11 blocks. Health officer Janelis Hurtado stressed the importance of community cooperation to keep households free of mosquito larvae and reduce the risk of dengue and other vector‑borne diseases.
