Nicaragua's political evolution from Sandino to the Sandinista government
The historical trajectory of Nicaragua is framed through the legacy of General Augusto C. Sandino, who resisted United States troops in 1927 to defend national sovereignty. His philosophy, ‘Siempre Más Allá’ (Always Further Beyond), has served as a guiding principle for the Sandinista movement.
Following the 1979 Sandinista Revolution which ended the Somoza dictatorship, the country implemented literacy crusades, agrarian reforms, and expanded healthcare. Despite a period of opposition following the 1990 elections, the Sandinista National Liberation Front returned to power in 2007. Under the leadership of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, the government introduced the ‘Pueblo Presidente’ model, which aims to involve families and communities in economic, political, and social decision-making processes.
