Nicchio Contrada wins Palio di Siena after 28 years

The Nicchio Contrada won the Palio dell'Assunta in Siena on August 18, 2026, marking their first victory in 28 years. The win was achieved by jockey Giovanni Atzeni, known as Tittia, riding the horse Anda e Bola.

Atzeni secured his 13th career Palio victory, moving him closer to the historical record of 14 wins held by Andrea Degortes. However, the celebration was marred by an accident immediately following the race. While celebrating on the track, Atzeni was involved in a collision and fell from his horse, resulting in a head trauma. He was transported to the Santa Maria alle Scotte hospital in Siena.

Medical reports indicate that Atzeni arrived at the emergency room conscious and his condition has since shown improvement. He remains under observation for at least 24 hours. The race itself followed several delays due to bad weather and was characterized by a tense start with multiple invalidated departures. Animal rights groups have criticized the event, citing concerns over the agitation of the horses and the safety of the track during celebrations.
