Nicco Nyan anime removed from Taiwan streaming platforms over tobacco branding

The Japanese anime series ‘Nicco Nyan’ has been removed from several streaming platforms in Taiwan, including Bahamut Anime Crazy, following complaints regarding its depiction of smoking. The Dong Shih Foundation intervened after receiving reports that the animation frequently features close-ups of real tobacco brands and packaging, which may violate Taiwan’s Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act.

The Foundation argued that while the series depicts a character with a smoking addiction, the explicit display of identifiable brand names and logos could serve as a loophole for tobacco advertising. Under Article 12 of the Act, tobacco brand advertisements are prohibited across various media, including digital platforms. The Health Promotion Administration has referred the matter to local health bureaus for investigation; if found in violation, penalties could reach NT$1 million.

The removal has sparked public debate. Some viewers and former legislator Cheng Yun-peng defended the series, suggesting the animation actually portrays smoking in a negative, unattractive light that discourages the habit. Others questioned the consistency of enforcement, comparing the treatment of the anime to how tobacco is depicted in domestic films.
