France wildfire investigations: arrests made in fatal Bordeaux and Nice arson cases

French authorities have detained 474 people, including 183 minors, in connection with wildfires since July 1. The arrests come amid intense heatwaves and widespread forest fires across the country.

In a major investigation near Bordeaux airport, a 15-year-old has been charged with involuntary destruction by fire causing death. The suspect admitted to throwing a cigarette butt at the site of a July 21 fire that trapped and killed two professional firefighters, Wilfried Schmitter and Anthony Berthôme. The teenager has been placed in a closed educational center.

Separately, in Nice, a 26-year-old man, Yassine K., has been placed in custody for allegedly organizing an arson attack in the Moulins district that killed seven people in July 2024. The attack, linked to drug trafficking disputes, involved a commando that set fire to an apartment building. Seven suspects are currently in pre-trial detention in this case.

These incidents have fueled anger among French firefighter unions, who are threatening national industrial action in September to protest a perceived lack of resources and equipment.
