Nice implements penalties for unjustified school canteen absences
The Nice municipal council, led by Éric Ciotti, has approved a new measure to penalize parents whose children miss school canteen meals without prior notice. To combat food waste, the city will impose a surcharge of 4.90 euros per day for unjustified absences.
This penalty will be applied in addition to the standard meal cost, which ranges from 0.80 to 3.30 euros depending on household income. To avoid the fine, parents must provide notice at least 72 hours in advance. The penalty is reportedly not applicable if the child is ill. The decision has drawn criticism from local figures who argue the additional cost may place a burden on families already facing financial difficulties.
