Nice Rugby Club Blocked from Pro D2 Promotion Over Budget
The French rugby hierarchy has denied promotion to the Nice club for the upcoming Pro D2 season after the financial regulator A2R judged the team's budget insufficient. The decision highlights the growing economic pressures on professional rugby in France, where clubs must meet stringent stadium and revenue requirements to sustain high‑level competition.
Similar financial strains have affected other clubs such as Dax, Béziers, Biarritz, Tarbes and Niort, many of which have faced deficits, with some filing for bankruptcy mid‑season. The Ligue Nationale de Rugby continues to push for larger venues and stronger commercial partnerships, but smaller, rural‑based clubs struggle to generate the necessary ticket sales and sponsorships.
