Niche analysis: High-paying jobs without college degrees are rare in the U.S

An analysis by the higher education platform Niche reveals that while high-paying jobs without a bachelor's degree exist in the United States, they are rare. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 9.4% of occupations with a median salary of $100,000 or more do not require a degree. These roles account for just 0.3% of the 13.8 million available non-degree positions.

The highest-paying roles without a degree typically require federal certification or specialized training, such as air traffic controllers, commercial pilots, nuclear reactor operators, and elevator installers. In contrast, common skilled trades like plumbers, electricians, and HVAC technicians often have lower median incomes, ranging between approximately $61,000 and $64,000.

Research from the National Bureau of Economic Research indicates a significant degree premium, noting that the wage gap between degree holders and high school graduates can increase from 27% at age 25 to 60% by age 55. While some states are implementing skill-based hiring to remove degree requirements for public sector roles, experts note that many high-earning non-degree workers rely on extensive experience, apprenticeships, or entrepreneurship to achieve significant financial success.
