Nicholas Opoku remanded for alleged GH¢147,536 credit union theft
Nicholas Opoku, a 25-year-old field cashier for the Anglican Diocese Cooperative Credit Union, has been remanded into police custody following allegations of stealing GH¢147,536.00.
The matter came to light on July 17, 2026, when a customer reported that her daily ‘Susu’ contributions were not being recorded in her passbook despite being collected by Opoku. A subsequent audit by the credit union's manager, Isha Ibrahim, allegedly revealed the misappropriation of funds.
According to prosecution statements, Opoku allegedly admitted to investigators that he had been using the money to cover personal expenses since he began his employment in 2020. Opoku appeared before the Nkawie Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region, where his plea was not taken. He is scheduled to return to court on September 4, 2026.
