Nick Bilton named 60 Minutes executive producer amid CBS News overhaul
CBS News appointed former New York Times technology columnist Nick Bilton as the fifth executive producer in the 58‑year history of the flagship newsmagazine “60 Minutes.” The move, announced on May 28, is part of a broader restructuring led by editor‑in‑chief Bari Weiss, who has also dismissed long‑time executive producer Tanya Simon and other senior staff, including correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.
Bilton, who has no traditional broadcast‑news management experience, said his goal is to transform the program into a digital‑first, multiplatform offering, expanding its reach beyond the Sunday‑night slot. Staff members have expressed alarm and frustration, with reports of internal tension, staff departures, and concerns that the changes could undermine the show’s long‑standing journalism style.
The overhaul follows a period of strong ratings and audience growth for “60 Minutes,” but CBS executives argue that a new approach is required to keep the brand relevant in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
