Nick Kyrgios suspended after testing positive for cocaine
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after testing positive for cocaine. The adverse analytical finding, which detected benzoylecgonine—a metabolite of cocaine—occurred following a doping control test conducted on June 22 during the ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain.
The suspension became effective on August 4. Under the terms of the provisional measure, Kyrgios is prohibited from competing, training, or attending any official events sanctioned by professional tennis organizations, including the ATP, WTA, and Grand Slam tournaments.
Kyrgios has publicly accepted responsibility for the error, stating on social media that he had made a ‘huge mistake’. He attributed the incident to the physical and mental strain caused by recent injuries and the difficulty of facing the potential end of his professional career. As part of his recovery process, he announced a 28-day hiatus from social media and public life. While the player has the right to appeal the decision, he has not yet done so.
