Nick Langworthy introduces American Quantum Competitiveness Act

U.S. Representative Nick Langworthy has introduced the American Quantum Competitiveness Act, a legislative proposal designed to strengthen the United States' position in the emerging quantum technology sector. The bill seeks to designate the U.S. Department of Commerce as the lead federal agency responsible for coordinating commercial quantum policy, including manufacturing, deployment, investment, and supply-chain management.

A central goal of the legislation is to develop a national quantum competitiveness strategy in collaboration with industry, researchers, federal agencies, and trusted allies. The act aims to identify critical components, reduce reliance on foreign adversaries, and facilitate the transition of quantum technologies from research and development into domestic commercial production. This includes advancements in computing, communications, and sensing.

Langworthy noted that the bill is intended to help the U.S. compete with China and mitigate supply-chain vulnerabilities. Supporters suggest the initiative could benefit regional manufacturing hubs, particularly those involved in semiconductors, photonics, lasers, and cryogenics, by connecting research institutions and the technology workforce to the quantum industry.
