Nick Pivetta set to return to Padres rotation this Monday

San Diego Padres right-hander Nick Pivetta is scheduled to return from the injured list this Monday to start against the Washington Nationals. Pivetta, the team’s Opening Day starter, has been sidelined since mid-April due to an elbow flexor strain, appearing in only four games this season.

Following a minor setback during his rehab assignment in early August, Pivetta completed two recent outings without incident, including 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his latest start. Manager Craig Stammen indicated that while Pivetta is expected to start, the team is keeping all options open, including potential relief roles. The return is critical for the Padres as they compete for a National League wild-card berth.

Pivetta’s return also carries financial implications. Due to a special clause in his four-year, $55 million contract related to similar injuries, the Padres may be able to void the final two years and $32 million of the deal after his extended absence. The rotation faces additional pressure as Joe Musgrove continues to battle setbacks in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
