Nick Reiner denied access to $1.5M trust amid parents' murder case

Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of legendary director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Reiner, is fighting a legal battle to access a trust fund valued at approximately $1.5 million. Reiner is currently facing murder charges following the December 2025 deaths of his parents, who were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home. Prosecutors have recently added charges of murder by means of lying in wait.

Reiner has petitioned probate court for access to the funds, specifically requesting around $558,000 to hire private legal counsel and cover basic needs in custody. However, the trust's trustees have blocked the request, citing California’s ‘slayer statute.’ This law prevents individuals accused of intentionally killing a decedent from inheriting or benefiting from that person's estate.

Trustees argue that releasing the funds would be ‘irreversible’ and that the law provides no exception for criminal defense costs. If the statute is applied, the funds would instead be transferred to Reiner’s siblings, Romy and Jake. Reiner’s defense maintains that the statute is inapplicable because he has not been convicted and remains presumed innocent.
