Nicki Minaj urges Christians to incorporate elections into sermons

During an appearance at the X Takeover event held at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin, rapper Nicki Minaj called on the Christian community to engage more deeply with politics. Minaj stated, “Christians as a whole need to wake up,” and argued that “the elections should be incorporated into what they’re preaching at church.”

These remarks come ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. Minaj has recently become a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, previously urging young voters to “vote red.” Her advocacy has also extended to international religious issues, including calling for greater protection of religious communities at the United Nations.

The call for political preaching follows recent legal developments regarding the Johnson Amendment, a 1954 tax law that historically barred tax-exempt nonprofits and churches from endorsing political candidates. In a July 2025 court filing, the IRS indicated that pastors endorsing candidates from the pulpit should not risk their tax-exempt status, as part of a proposed settlement in a lawsuit involving the National Religious Broadcasters.
