Nicko McBrain discusses past heroin use in new autobiography

Former Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain has revealed that he used heroin in the late 1970s, prior to joining the band in 1982. In his new autobiography, ‘Hello Boys And Girls!’, McBrain described his method of use as ‘chasing the dragon’ via smoking rather than injection.

McBrain stated that he felt fortunate to have been able to stop using the drug before his tenure with Iron Maiden began. He attributed his ability to quit relatively easily to a perceived genetic predisposition, noting that while he experienced cold sweats and nervousness, he did not undergo a severe withdrawal process.

He used the interview to encourage those struggling with substance abuse to seek professional assistance, stating, ‘It’s not admitting defeat.’

McBrain, who retired from touring with the band in December 2024 after more than 40 years, replaced drummer Clive Burr. The autobiography was released in the United Kingdom on October 22.
