Nico Gonzalez targeted by Newcastle and Real Madrid

Manchester City has informed midfielder Nico Gonzalez that he is permitted to leave the club as Newcastle United and Real Madrid compete for his signature. The 24-year-old Spaniard, who joined City from Porto in February 2025, has struggled to secure a regular starting role under manager Enzo Maresca.

Newcastle United has entered exploratory talks with Manchester City, viewing Gonzalez as a potential replacement for midfielders Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali. While no formal bid has been submitted, Newcastle considers him a primary target to bolster their squad before the season opener against Liverpool.

Real Madrid is also monitoring the situation, adding the midfielder to their shortlist following their failure to secure Rodri. Gonzalez, who is contracted with Manchester City until 2029, has a market valuation of approximately €40 million. Although some teammates reportedly encouraged him to stay, the player is now considered open to a move to secure more consistent playing time.
