Nico Hischier begins contract extension talks with New Jersey Devils

Swiss captain Nico Hischier and his agent Allain Roy have entered preliminary discussions with New Jersey Devils general manager Sunny Mehta about a new contract. The meetings, first held in Newark last month and most recently at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo, are described as being in the “infancy” stage. Hischier, who has one year left on his seven‑year, $7.25 million‑average contract, is expected to command roughly $11.5 million per year on an eight‑year extension, according to analysts. The Devils also have pending negotiations with forwards Arseny Gritsyuk and Simon Nemec.

Montreal Canadiens executives are reportedly monitoring the situation closely and would be prepared to make a significant offer should Hischier become available. Hischier recently competed for Switzerland at the World Championships, where the team earned a silver medal after an overtime loss to Finland.
