Nico Williams opens up on injury‑plagued season ahead of World Cup 2026

Spanish forward Nico Williams, 23, of Athletic Bilbao, said his 2023‑24 season was marred by a pubalgia and a hamstring injury, describing it as “a year of sh*t”. He recorded six goals and five assists in 32 club matches, but missed large periods and even broke down in tears during the ordeal. Williams told Marca that the hardships taught him to better manage his physical condition and that he is now fully recovered.

Williams is part of Spain’s squad for the 2026 World Cup and made a three‑minute appearance in the tournament opener, a 0‑0 draw with Cape Verde. He said his playing time depends on coach Luis de la Fuente, adding, “If the coach gives me the chance, I’ll be ready and happy to play.” He expressed optimism about contributing to Spain’s campaign after the difficult year.
