Nicola Porpora: Neapolitan composer and master vocal teacher

Nicola Porpora, a prominent figure of the Neapolitan school of opera, is commemorated on the 340th anniversary of his birth. Born in Naples in August 1686, Porpora was a prolific composer of over sixty operas, as well as oratorios, cantatas, and sacred works.

He is widely recognized as one of history’s most influential vocal teachers. His students included legendary castrati such as Farinelli and Caffarelli, as well as the renowned composer Joseph Haydn. Porpora’s work was noted for its vocal innovation, particularly his use of recitatives that mimicked the rhythm and intonation of spoken language.

Throughout his career, Porpora held prestigious positions, including serving as chapel master to Prince Philip of Hesse and as a master at the Conservatorio di S. Onofrio. His professional life was marked by significant musical rivalries, including a notable competition with George Frideric Handel in London while leading the Opera of the Nobility.
