Nicola Sturgeon reported to police for alleged handling of stolen goods

Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been reported to Police Scotland following allegations of handling stolen goods. The formal complaint was submitted by Stuart Campbell, who runs the pro-independence blog Wings over Scotland.

Campbell alleges that Sturgeon has been in possession of high-value items purchased by her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, using funds embezzled from the Scottish National Party (SNP). Under Scots law, the offence of ‘reset’ can apply to individuals who possess stolen property, regardless of whether they knew the items were stolen at the time of receipt or discovered the truth later.

Peter Murrell, the former SNP chief executive, was recently jailed for five years and three months after admitting to embezzling approximately £400,000 from the party between 2010 and 2022. Sturgeon has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, stating she was horrified to learn that some gifts from Murrell were bought with embezzled money. She has maintained that because she was not involved in the embezzlement, her personal property should not be subject to recovery processes.
