Nicola Willis outlines economic plan amid political debate

New Zealand Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Labour spokesperson Barbara Edmonds have presented opposing economic strategies ahead of the upcoming election. Willis has criticized Labour’s proposals regarding Crown expenditure and revenue, as well as their plan to return employment to the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy mandate. Willis argued that a dual mandate led to “confused decision making” during the Covid-19 period, contributing to asset bubbles and high inflation.

Willis outlined a National Party platform focused on encouraging investment, increasing productivity through capital intensity, reducing red tape, and delivering necessary infrastructure. She noted that while the economy grew at 0.8 percent in the first three months of the year—outpacing both Australia and the United States during that period—subsequent external factors, including oil price shocks, have complicated the recovery.

Labour’s approach, as indicated by Edmonds, focuses on addressing purchasing power and the cost-of-living crisis through different fiscal and monetary frameworks.
