Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy celebrates 81 years
The Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF) recently marked its 81st anniversary. Founded in 1945 to address an acute shortage of medical personnel and a difficult sanitary situation in the region, the institution has evolved from a secondary-tier facility into a leading center for medical training in Moldova with international recognition.
Historian Ion Xenofontov noted that prior to the university's establishment, the region had very few doctors. By 1965, the institution had risen to become the fourth-ranked medical institute among 87 in the Soviet Union, following only those in Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev. The university's development was supported by medical elites arriving from regions such as Kislovodsk following the political shifts of World War II.
