Nicolai Tangen warns of potential total loss for Norway’s sovereign wealth fund
Nicolai Tangen, head of Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, has issued warnings regarding the potential for the fund to lose its value entirely during extreme global crises. During a recent financial speech, Tangen suggested that catastrophic events such as nuclear war or bioterrorism could render the fund nearly worthless, aiming to increase “collective mental preparedness.”
While the fund currently holds a value of approximately 22,000 billion NOK, Tangen and analysts note that various scenarios—including AI stock market crashes, debt crises, or food shocks—could lead to a 40–50 percent decline in value. Experts, including professor Einar Lie and partner Jon Gunnar Pedersen, acknowledge that while such total loss is highly improbable, the risks of hyperinflation, war, or nationalization are real historical precedents.
Commentators suggest these warnings serve as a necessary caution for policymakers. If the fund’s value were to be halved, the current annual spending of approximately 600 billion NOK might become unsustainable, potentially requiring decades for the fund to recover to current levels.
