Nicolas Cage identifies first film taken for financial reasons

Actor Nicolas Cage has revealed that the 1990 action thriller ‘Fire Birds’ was the first film he accepted primarily for financial reasons. Cage stated that he had overextended himself financially after purchasing a house and realized he urgently needed money.

In the film, Cage played Jake Preston, a helicopter pilot involved in an operation against South American drug cartels. While he initially accepted the role to play a typical American hero, Cage noted that he eventually began interpreting the character through his own unique lens, adding eccentricities that reportedly did not please the producers.

Although ‘Fire Birds’ did not achieve critical or commercial success and eventually faded into obscurity, the project serves as an early example of Cage taking roles to address financial pressures, a pattern that became a well-known aspect of his later career.
