Malibu sinkhole destroys driveway at Nicolas Cage mansion
A massive sinkhole has opened on the driveway of actor Nicolas Cage’s $10.5 million beachfront mansion in Malibu, California. The collapse, triggered by severe coastal erosion from high tides and heavy surf associated with Tropical Storm Marie, caused significant damage to the property's entrance and garage area.
The sinkhole, reported to be approximately 9 meters wide and up to 7.6 meters deep, swallowed asphalt, concrete, and construction debris. The incident also caused a natural gas leak, prompting an immediate response from SoCalGas and local emergency crews. While the gas leak was contained, utility services were temporarily suspended in the area as a precaution.
The City of Malibu declared a local emergency, issuing evacuation orders for dozens of nearby properties. Authorities have red-tagged several homes due to structural risks and the loss of safe vehicle access to the private road. No injuries have been reported, and the mansion was unoccupied at the time of the collapse as it was undergoing renovations.
