Nicolas Winding Refn returns with ‘Her Private Hell’

Director Nicolas Winding Refn returns to feature filmmaking with his new project, ‘Her Private Hell’. Following a decade-long hiatus from solo feature directing, the Danish filmmaker premiered the film at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026.

Set in a futuristic Japan, the thriller follows two main characters: Elle, played by Sophie Thatcher, and Private K, played by Charles Melton. The plot centers on Elle’s search for her father, a famous director and former American soldier, amidst a metropolis transformed by a mysterious and deadly fog.

The film features an international cast including Diego Calva, Kristine Froseth, and Havana Rose Liu. Distributed by MUBI, the film is scheduled for release in Mexican cinemas on September 24, 2026.
