Nicole Holmes discusses human stories in medical photography

Nicole Holmes, a Nikon ambassador in Mexico, presented her lecture “Telling stories that read without words: photography for books” during the 11th Health Science Book Fair 2026. Holmes discussed her professional journey and the creative processes behind her books, “Artistas del quirófano” and “Galenos.”

She explained that her interest in medicine grew from working in veterinary and emergency hospitals, leading her to combine electronic engineering training with photography. Holmes emphasized that medical photography serves to reveal human stories rather than just documenting surgical procedures. She noted that impactful images are those that create emotional connections and highlighted the importance of rhythm, contrast, and transitions in photographic books. According to Holmes, the most significant challenge in book production is editing, as the narrative must take precedence over individual ego to ensure the story remains the primary focus.
