Nicoletta Rita Del Rosso wins photography prize for Avezzano sugar factory image

Nicoletta Rita Del Rosso has won the seventh edition of the photography competition organized by the Lions Club Roseto degli Abruzzi Valle del Vomano. The competition, themed ‘Architectures of Labor: Memories of Places in Time’, focused on documenting decommissioned factories, workshops, and artisanal laboratories.

Del Rosso’s winning photograph depicts the ancient Zuccherificio di Avezzano, a site central to the industrial history of the Fucino plain. Founded in the late 19th century for sugar beet production, the facility survived the 1915 Marsica earthquake and various world conflicts before finally closing in 1986. The winning shot holds personal significance for the photographer, as her grandfather worked at the plant.

The jury, led by photographer Roberto Furlone, selected the image for its ability to combine photographic quality with narrative strength. Proceeds from the competition entry fees are donated to the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).
