Nicolás Gaitán returns to professional football with Aldosivi
Former Benfica midfielder Nicolás Gaitán, 38, has signed a contract with Argentine Primera División side Aldosivi that runs until 31 December 2027. The deal follows Gaitán’s retirement announcement a year and a half ago after a brief spell at Sarmiento, with his last official appearance recorded in December 2024 against Banfield.
Aldosivi, fighting to avoid relegation, has undertaken a major squad overhaul, releasing sixteen players and adding experienced signings such as Andrés Chávez, Lucas Castro and Leonardo Sigali. Gaitán’s move reunites him with coach Israel Damonte, who previously managed him at the club, and aligns with the rebuilding plan overseen by club director Hernán Tillous. Over his career, Gaitán progressed from Boca Juniors' youth system, peaked at Benfica with 253 matches, 41 goals and 88 assists, and also represented clubs including Atlético Madrid, SC Braga, Lille, Chicago Fire and others. His signing marks the eleventh club of his professional journey and is intended to bolster Aldosivi’s bid to remain in Argentina’s top flight.
