Nicolás Paz emerges as candidate for Argentina's number 10

Nicolás Paz has emerged as a leading candidate to inherit the number 10 jersey for the Argentina national football team following the era of Lionel Messi. The 22-year-old midfielder, who was born in Spain but chose to represent Argentina, has gained significant attention due to his performances in Italy.

Currently playing for Como 1907 in Serie A, Paz has demonstrated high technical ability and playmaking skills. During the 2025-26 season, he recorded 12 goals and 6 assists in 35 matches, earning accolades as the Serie A Best U-23 Player and Best Midfielder. His professional background includes training at Real Madrid, where he made appearances in the Champions League.

While figures such as Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez and Oscar Ruggeri have identified him as a potential successor, national team coach Lionel Scaloni has maintained a cautious approach regarding the assignment of the iconic number. Paz made his international debut against Bolivia in 2024, notably providing an assist to Messi during the match.
