Lefkoşa court postpones trials in Northern Cyprus alcohol formula scandal

The legal proceedings regarding the “alcohol formula scandal” in Northern Cyprus have been postponed. In two separate cases heard at the Lefkoşa Heavy Criminal Court, five nurses face charges including negligence and professional misconduct following an incident at the Emergency Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on October 25, 2024.

The incident involved ethyl alcohol being mistakenly added to a water heater used for preparing infant formula. The error resulted in the death of 20-day-old Mihrimah Toymuradov and caused health complications for six other infants. While the affected infants were later discharged, their families continue to seek justice.

Defense attorneys for the accused nurses have stated that their clients deny all charges. Both criminal trials have been adjourned until December 3, 2026. Additionally, a civil lawsuit has been initiated by the mother of the deceased infant, with other affected families preparing to file similar legal actions.
