Nicosia historical map recovered and returned to Enna State Archives
The Guardia di Finanza has recovered and returned a valuable historical document to the State Archives of Enna. The item is an original 1874 urban cadastre map of Nicosia, Sicily.
The recovery followed a report from a private citizen who noticed the antique map displayed in a local professional's office. Investigations by the Guardia di Finanza revealed that the document had been stolen years ago from the Nicosia Direct Tax Office by unknown individuals. It had subsequently come into the possession of a local professional and a deceased colleague without proof of legal acquisition.
Technical analysis by experts from the State Archives confirmed the map's authenticity. Dating back to the late 19th century, the map was a vital tool for the taxation of real estate and agricultural property in the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. It was used to calculate land rents, verify property ownership to combat tax evasion, and record land transfers.
The professional holding the map has been reported to judicial authorities for the crime of suppression, destruction, and concealment of true documents. The map has been handed over to the State Archives of Enna for public consultation.
