Nicosia officials debate Makariou Avenue traffic changes and EU funding
Debate has intensified in Nicosia regarding traffic regulations and urban redevelopment on Makariou Avenue. The Parliamentary Transport Committee is revisiting the issue, including discussions on the one-way system of the southern section and requests to reopen closed sections to general traffic.
A central point of contention is the €21 million in European Union funding allocated for the project. The European Commission has indicated that any modifications to the project must adhere to the original terms under which the funds were approved. The redevelopment, which includes Makariou Avenue, Stasikratous, and the Commercial Triangle, was 85% funded by EU resources.
Minister of Transport Evi Tsollaki has expressed opposition to any traffic changes that might necessitate the return of funds to the EU. Meanwhile, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prontzos stated that a study regarding traffic regulation changes has been completed and will be submitted to the Municipal Council, aiming to implement changes without violating EU funding conditions.
