Nicosia private clinic suspended after newborn diagnosed with legionellosis

A newborn in Nicosia is in critical condition after being diagnosed with legionellosis, a serious lung infection. The infant, who was born on September 26, is currently receiving treatment with mechanical respiratory support at the Makarios Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Following the diagnosis, the Cyprus Ministry of Health suspended operations at the private clinic where the baby was born and treated. Preliminary investigations into the clinic’s water supply network revealed the presence of Legionella pneumophila bacteria.

Health authorities have transferred other newborns from the facility to different medical centers. While environmental testing and epidemiological surveillance are ongoing to identify the exact source of contamination, officials stated that no other confirmed or suspected cases of the disease have been identified in connection to the clinic or other facilities in the country.
