Nicotine Pouches Grow in Gulf Amid Health Concerns as US FDA Grants Modified‑Risk Authorization

Nicotine pouches are expanding rapidly across the Gulf, with doctors warning that the flavored, tobacco‑free sachets can damage gums, raise blood pressure and pose unknown long‑term health risks, especially for young users. Dr. Kadhem Al Halwachi of Manama Medical Centre noted that some pouches deliver more nicotine than a cigarette, while the Bahrain Cancer Society placed them below vapes and cigarettes on the harm scale but highlighted addiction and cardiovascular concerns.

In the United States, the FDA has for the first time authorized Swedish Match’s ZYN nicotine pouches to be marketed with a modified‑risk claim, stating that adult smokers who completely switch from cigarettes to ZYN can substantially lower their risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The agency emphasized that the claim applies only to adult smokers who fully replace cigarettes and does not endorse the products as cessation aids. Both regions face ongoing regulatory debate over youth access and product standards.
