Nicușor Dan declined French citizenship during studies

Nicușor Dan has shared details regarding his time spent studying in France between 1992 and 1995 at the École Normale Supérieure. In a recent interview, he revealed that he was offered French citizenship during his stay but declined the offer, stating that doing so ‘would not be honest.’

Dan noted that although he stayed in France for six years—longer than his initial one-year plan—his intention was always to return to Romania. He described feeling like a foreigner while abroad, noting that his mind remained focused on his home country. He expressed gratitude for the professional training he received through the French state but emphasized his commitment to returning to Romania to contribute to his own country.
