Nidar moves major confectionery production out of Norway

Orkla is relocating significant portions of Nidar’s confectionery production from its factory in Trondheim, Norway, to other locations. The company confirmed that seasonal marzipan production will move to Estonia, where the Orkla-owned producer Kalev will take over the lines.

Several iconic Norwegian candy brands, including Smørbukk, Laban, IFA, and Doc, are also set to leave the Trondheim facility. While the exact future production sites for Laban, Doc, and IFA have not yet been finalized, the move marks a major shift for the historic plant, which was founded in 1912.

The strategic reorganization aims to transform the Trondheim factory into a specialized chocolate production site. By moving marzipan and other confectionery lines, Nidar intends to free up capacity for increased chocolate production, specifically focusing on products like Smash, which will receive a new production line this autumn.

Local political representatives from the Industry and Business Party (INP) have expressed concern regarding the loss of domestic value creation and the impact on local jobs, arguing for stronger support for Norwegian raw material processing.
