Nidaros Cathedral to undergo major copper roof replacement
Increased funding in the Norwegian state budget has enabled Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Works (NDR) to begin the process of replacing the worn copper roofs of the nation's most significant historical building. The characteristic green copper roof is in poor condition, with wind and precipitation causing extensive leaks in the spire and main nave. These leaks pose a risk to the masonry, lighting, organ, and other technical installations.
Oddmund Hoel, Director of NDR, stated that the permanent increase in funding allows for long-term planning of the work, which is expected to span several years. The replacement will be a massive and costly undertaking requiring many tons of copper and extensive scaffolding. NDR intends to divide the project into several sub-projects and hopes to begin practical work in 2027.
The current copper roofing was installed during restoration efforts between 1888 and 1928.
