Nidderau and German municipalities implement budget freezes

Municipalities in Germany are facing severe financial constraints, leading to budget freezes and significant austerity measures. In Nidderau, Mayor Andreas Bär has initiated a budget freeze and a hiring freeze to address a deteriorating financial situation. The city aims to reduce full-time equivalent positions by 10 percent by the end of 2029. Consequently, planned investments in Nidderau are expected to drop from 13 million euros to nearly 3 million euros in 2026. Other measures include a planned increase in the property tax rate for 2027 and higher fees for dog taxes and local swimming facilities.

Similar trends are visible in other regions, such as Unna, where a budget freeze was also implemented. The financial pressure is widespread; according to the Hessian Ministry of the Interior, only about one-third of municipalities in the state submitted balanced budgets for 2025. These funding gaps are forcing local administrations to review existing services and drastically restrict planned investments in infrastructure like schools and sports facilities.
