Nidec Corp. finds 844 cases of quality control misconduct

Japanese motor manufacturer Nidec Corp. has revealed the results of an internal investigation that uncovered 844 instances of quality control misconduct occurring over the last decade. The findings, which date back to 2012, include unauthorized changes to product materials and manufacturing processes, faked product tests, and false labeling regarding product origins.

Chief Executive Mitsuya Kishida issued a formal apology to investors, customers, and society during a news conference. Company officials attributed the misconduct to employees working under intense pressure to achieve results during periods of rapid expansion.

While the investigation was prompted by previous accounting fraud, Nidec stated that no safety issues have been identified as a result of the wrongdoing and no massive recalls are planned. The company produces motors for various sectors, including robotics, air conditioners, and automotive components such as driver-assistance systems.
