Nidwalden and Obwalden lift forest fire bans

The forest fire risk in the Swiss cantons of Nidwalden and Obwalden has eased following recent rainfall. The Fire Inspectorate Obwalden Nidwalden has lowered the danger level from 4 (high) to 3 (significant).

As a result of this downgrade, the absolute ban on fire in and near forests, as well as the general ban on fireworks, has been lifted effective immediately. These restrictions had been in place since July 10, 2026, due to prolonged drought.

Despite the reduction in risk, authorities warn that the danger of forest and field fires persists. Soil and vegetation in exposed or dry areas can still ignite quickly. The public is urged to exercise extreme caution when using fire, ensuring it is only used in designated fire pits, supervised at all times, and completely extinguished before leaving. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will adjust the danger level if drought conditions worsen.
